This Cub pilot obviously has experience at landing at his HOME
BASE. Bernard 's comment leads me to believe that he is an Air
Force pilot ...with limited expaerience and no sense of adventure.
We thought this video was great too, glad you liked it Marcus. The
spirit of adventure was one of the leading reasons we chose to
feature it in this week’s (2/9/2011) newsletter.
The landing was not as hairy as it appears. We land on our spring
fed pond at the end of the season to get it off floats. The Cub has
been in the family since 1954. My father traded a $50.00 duck boat
for it and I can still remember as a 9 year old the shadow dropping
away and the tire spinning to a stop as my brother and I flew with
Dad out of the local pasture. I try to bring those memories back
every time I fly it.
Nice piece of airmanship. I would like to comment on Marcus
Kephart's cheap shot about a previous commenter probably being "an
Air Force pilot... with limited experience and no sense of
adventure". Apparently Marcus is not aware of Air Force pilots who
flew the 0-1 (L-19) in combat as Forward Air Controllers (FACs) in
Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia during the Vietnam War. If you want to
read about outstanding airmanship and real adventure, read "Hit My
Smoke" by Jan Chuchill and "A Certain Brotherhood" by Col Jimmy
Butler, USAF (Ret).
Aviation wasn't built on principals like, simple, safe, easy and idiot
proof.Thats what i like about it. funny what some people think is
unsafe or dangerous we call fun,Bernie,go back to TV,golf or play
cards.
Now THERE'S some flying folks. How can it get any better than a J-3
on floats on a calm afternoon? Stick n rudder and an A-65! Bernie
just needs a ride with the door open. He'll be smilin' from ear to
ear!
All fine, right up to the slow taxi, with pilot standing on the
right float, in front of the wing strut. Guess what happens if the
floats hit something submerged? The pilot pitches forward into the
prop. He would not be the first to die this way. Don't do this!
