Flying and landing on Catalina Island
Catalina is a beautiful island in the Pacific ocean, 25 miles off Los Angeles, with hundreds of wild bisons roaming free.
The airport is nicknamed the "Airport in the sky" because it sits on the highest peak of the island. It was created by blowing-up two mountain tops and filling-in the gap! It is a challenging airstrip to land to because it is bordered by two cliffs; people say it's a little bit like landing on an aircraft carrier. Don't trust your eyes for a correct approach, trust your altimeter!
Avalon is the island's main town and is a cute and delightful place to visit. With narrow streets and quaint little alleys the inhabitants get around by driving golf carts instead of cars!
Little Harbors and Two-Harbors are small villages where you can camp. Perfect for kayaking and diving for enjoying the teeming sea life. Getting there is certainly half the fun over the dirt roads that meander around steep cliffs and canyons.
