Howard Hughes design of his beloved 'Connie' -- the Lockheed Constellation -- became part of the Pan American Clipper line just prior to the end of World War II, and was the US Airforce C-69. Howard and the 'Connie' are featured in our book taken from the memoirs by Flight Radio Officer, Paul Rafford, Jr:

"In the summer of 1945, the Air Transport Command assigned one of the first Connies to Pan Am. At the time, no other plane could fly non-stop between New York and San Francisco plus carry a good payload. Now that the war was over in Europe, our job was to rush high priority military personnel and cargo between the two cities -- essentially from the Atlantic to the Pacific war theater."
