About
Challenge Air hosts approximately ten, well-organized, community-driven programs where 125 special needs children, 125 ground crew volunteers and 20 volunteer pilots come together to provide a once in a lifetime opportunity for special needs children and their families…the gift of flight. The “Fly Day” programs, centered around a 30-minute flight experience where the children actually get to pilot the aircraft, are usually held on a Saturday at a local airport and encompass many additional activities for the participants and families. Some of these include: an educational ground school, static military aircraft, service organizations setup booths offering imperative information for the families, lunch, face painting, entertainment, clowns, bounce houses, hands-on workstations, etc.
At a cruising altitude of 1,500 feet, what may seem like a routine flight to most, becomes for these special needs children, an experience that excites the senses with new-found inspiration that only the freedom of flight can offer, building their self-esteem and confidence.
At Challenge Air we believe that all children with special needs must be provided with opportunities to expand their individual perspectives and renew their faith in themselves. Part of this belief stems from what we have experienced over the past thirteen years while serving over 27,500 young participants and families, nationwide.
Parents have told us time and again that the knowledge their children obtain after a day with Challenge Air often manifests itself into a passion to learn more, and to push themselves farther than they ever have before. Challenge Air participants are given the tools for enriching, expanding and strengthening their identities. Their lives are forever changed.
If you are a pilot, we would love to have you volunteer at one of our Fly Days. Check out our 2010 events schedule and register online at www.challengeair.org.
You too will be forever changed!
